Anatomy of Aging
Abstract
Aging is a natural process. It starts with conception and continues throughout life. Whole body changes in this process. Bones are fragile and can be broken easily in the elderly. Muscles decrease in size and mass and sarcopenia can be seen with wasting in muscles. Sarcopenia means decrease in muscle mass and strength which is an invariable phenomenon of aging. Respiratory muscles get weaker and absorption capacity decreases. This causes decrease in oxygenation. Myocardium weight and mussle mass increases with aging. Gastric sphincter get weaker and acid secretion increases. Transmission rate of reflexes decrease in neurological system. Functional loss in sensory system is a common problem in the elderly. It is not possible to stop aging yet. However it is possible to increase quality of life.
