Abstract

Developmental delay is defined as delays in speech and language development, motor development, social-emotional development, and cognitive development. An estimated 12% to 16% of the pediatric population has a developmental disability. It is crucial that delays are identified as early as possible so these children receive the benefits of early detection and intervention. The first three years of life are critical for the development of brain structure and functioning. So the emphasis in screening has shifted to a younger age, with the current focus being on infants and children birth through two years of age. This is an age at which the primary care physician is very closely involved with children and families and is in an ideal position to play a central role in the early detection of developmental problems in young children.Frequent well-child visits in primary care are good opportunities for evaluating developmental status.
