Objective: Flu is an upper airway infection caused by influenza viruses and easily transmits human to human. Every year it causes seasonal pandemics infecting millions of people. It is an important public health problem since it causes increased admission to family and other health centers and incresed work load, increased hospitilization work and school abstinence, direct and indirect economic load and some percentage of mortality. There are effective and safe antivirals and vaccines against influenza. Althoug there is treatment, to take preventive measures should be the main strategy to limit the epidemics and and their effects. In this review, the main characteristics of influenza viruses, transmission ways and preventive measures such as physical barriers and vaccination to limit the epidemics have been reviewed.
