Current discussions about Genetically modified organisms
Genetically modified organisms (GMO) are products which have acquired a feature without its own inherent by alterations in its genetic sequence or gene transfer. These products are also transgenic products, this technology is also called recombinant DNA technology. At first GMO technology applications started for increasing the profit margin in the agricultural sector by reducing costs and increasing the yield rather than a global strategy. But now this practice is also thought to bring long-term solution to the global food problem. However, the use of GMOs as a source of food brought about serious discussions. Unfortunately, due to a lot of information pollution, our public doesn’t have a healthy knowledge about the reliability of GMO foods. Physicians, particularly family physicians, who have one on one communication with the public play an important role in creating awareness on this issue. This post aims to inform family physicians about GMOs in light of current knowledge, and to make it easier to respond to questions that they may face frequently.
