The Review and Assessment Scale for Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines
Objective: The appraisal tools are essential to develop qualified new clinical practice guidelines and assess the existing ones. AGREE Instrument, product of an international collaboration, is a validated and easily applicable tool among the other appraisal tools. The aim of this study is to translate the AGREE Instrument into Turkish and enable to use it in the process of development and evaluation of guidelines.
Method: The translation procedure which has been prepared by the AGREE Trust was followed for the Turkish translation of AGREE Instrument. First of all two translators, whose mother tongue was Turkish, translated the instrument into Turkish independently. These two translations were examined by a small working group to work out differences and discrepancies between the two versions and a consensual first draft translation was composed. After that this first draft translation was backtranslated from Turkish into English by two translators whose mother tongue was English. Discrepancies between the original English and backtranslated English version of the AGREE was examined. This served to identify ambiguities in the translation and to clarify those ambiguities for the definitive translation in the host language. In this way the final translation was prepared.
Conclusion: AGREE Instrument which has been translated into 22 languages, used in many of the countries. We believe that the Turkish version of AGREE will make a great contribution for the guideline developing studies.
