Introduction and Aim: Life satisfaction is defined as the result obtained by comparing a person’s expectations with what they have, the sum of their beliefs and evaluations about life, and their overall attitude towards life. The impact of life satisfaction on psychological well-being is well known. This study aims to determine the levels of life satisfaction among elderly individuals living in nursing homes and the factors influencing it.

Materials and Methods: The study was conducted between February and April 2024 with residents of four private nursing homes in Istanbul. A questionnaire consisting of questions regarding sociodemographic information and the “Revised Adult Life Satisfaction Scale” was administered through face-to-face interviews. Descriptive analyses, Mann-Whitney U, or Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to analyze the data. Statistical significance was set at p=0.05, and the confidence interval was 95%.

Results: A total of 62 participants who met the inclusion criteria, 39 women (62.9%) and 23 men (37.1%), participated in the study. The participants’ mean life satisfaction score was found to be 9.6 (SD=3.88). It was observed that higher educational levels, having friends, and frequent meetings with friends increased life satisfaction (p=0.009, p=0.015, and p<0.001, respectively).

Conclusion: Among the most significant modifiable factors affecting life satisfaction in older age are friendships. In this context, initiatives that support the social environment of the elderly can be beneficial in increasing life satisfaction and maintaining psychological well-being.
