Opinions of family physicians in Kütahya regarding the implementation of the referral system: A descriptive study
Aim: To evaluate the opinions of family physicians regarding the necessity, nature, effects, applicability, and sustainability of the referral chain.
Methods: The population of this descriptive cross-sectional study consisted of 97 family physicians (FPs) working in Kütahya. The study was completed with 82 participating FPs who agreed to participate. A questionnaire prepared by the researchers was used in this study. Data were collected by the researchers through face-to-face interviews with family physicians. Data were evaluated using the SPSS v20 statistical program.
Results: Thirty-nine (47.6%) of the participating FPs did not want the mandatory referral system to be implemented, 49 (59.8%) did not think that the mandatory referral system was a priority for the health system, and 48 (58.5%) thought that the mandatory referral system would not be sustainable if it started. Forty-two (51.2%) of the FPs thought that the referral system would negatively affect the quality of health services, and 47 (57.3%) thought that the referral system would negatively affect family medicine practice.
Conclusion: A large majority of FPs believe that various difficulties will arise if the referral system is implemented. According to the FPs participating in the study, it was determined that before implementing the referral system, measures such as balancing the workload of FPs, increasing the capacity of family health centers, and reducing the population dependent on FPs should be taken.
